Why I’m Not a Big Fan of Caching
Caching and CDNs can improve speed, sure. But sometimes they feel less like optimization and more like putting a blanket over messy code and pretending the room is clean.
Caching is one of those things people love to recommend the moment a website feels slow. Your site speed score is not great? “Just add caching.” Your pages feel heavy? “Use a caching plugin.” Your server response time is crying in the corner? “Cache it, bro.”
And to be fair, caching can help. I’m not going to pretend it does nothing. It can make a website load faster, reduce server load, and improve the experience for repeat visitors.
But I’ll be honest: I’m not a big fan of using caching as the main solution.
To me, caching often feels like a performance shortcut. Not always a bad shortcut, but still a shortcut. It can make a site appear faster without actually fixing the reason it was slow in the first place.
That is my main issue with it. If a website is slow because the code is inefficient, the structure is bloated, the assets are too heavy, or there are too many unnecessary scripts running, caching does not magically make those problems disappear.
It just stores a version of the result and serves it faster next time.
Useful? Yes. A real fix? Not always.
I’m fully aware that my current website is not coded as efficiently as it could be.
Like many websites, it grew over time. You add something here, change something there, test a few ideas, adjust the layout, add scripts, remove scripts, forget one file exists, and suddenly your website starts feeling like a backpack full of bricks.
It still works, but it is not as clean as it should be.
And once a site reaches that point, throwing caching on top of it can feel a bit like putting racing tires on a car that still has engine problems.
It might move better, but the real issue is still under the hood.
That is why I do not want to depend too much on caching. I would rather improve the foundation first.
If the code is cleaner, lighter, and more efficient, the website becomes faster for the right reasons. Not because a saved version is doing all the heavy lifting.
The biggest danger with caching is that it can give a false sense of performance.
You test the site, the cached page loads quickly, and everything looks great. But then a first-time visitor arrives, or the cache gets cleared, or a dynamic part of the website has to load, and suddenly the original performance problem is back.
That is when caching starts to feel less like a solution and more like a mask.
It can also make development annoying. You change something, refresh the page, and nothing happens.
Then you refresh again. Still nothing. Then you start questioning your code, your browser, your server, your life choices, and eventually remember:
That is one of the reasons I dislike relying on it too heavily. When you are actively improving a website, caching can get in the way.
You have to clear caches, purge files, test private windows, check CDN settings, and make sure visitors are not seeing outdated versions of pages or assets.
It adds another layer of complexity. Sometimes that layer is worth it. But sometimes it just makes the whole setup feel more fragile.
Caching also becomes more complicated when a website has dynamic parts.
Public pages and static files are usually fine. Blog posts, images, fonts, CSS files, JavaScript files — those can often be cached without much drama.
But things like forms, account pages, dashboards, checkout pages, carts, search results, and personalized content need more care.
Cache the wrong thing and suddenly users may see outdated information, broken forms, incorrect cart data, or content that was not meant for them.
Caching is powerful, but careless caching can create very weird problems.
And personally, I would rather avoid depending on something that can accidentally break parts of the user experience if it is not configured perfectly.
I feel the same way about CDNs.
Again, I’m not saying a CDN is useless. A CDN can make a website faster by serving files from locations closer to the visitor. For global traffic, static files, images, scripts, and stylesheets, that can be very helpful.
But personally, I’m not a big fan of depending on a CDN too much either.
The reason is simple: you lose a bit of control.
When your content, assets, or delivery layer sits behind another service, you are no longer fully in charge of how everything reaches the visitor. There is another system between your website and your users.
Sometimes that extra layer helps. Sometimes it becomes one more thing you have to trust, configure, and debug.
If something goes wrong with the CDN, your website can behave differently than expected. Files may not update immediately, cached versions may stay around longer than you want, or certain rules may affect how content is delivered.
And just like caching, a CDN can make performance look better without fixing the actual structure of the website.
That is why I see a CDN the same way I see caching: useful as an extra layer, but not something I want to rely on as the main solution.
I would rather first make the website lightweight, clean, and efficient on its own. Then, if a CDN makes sense, it can be added as a bonus instead of being used to compensate for a heavy codebase.
My current focus is simple: recode the website in a more efficient way.
Instead of using caching as the main fix, I want to make the actual website better. Cleaner code. Less unnecessary weight. Better structure. Fewer scripts doing things they do not need to do.
I want the site to feel faster because it is built better, not just because a cached version is being served.
That means looking at the codebase properly and asking questions like:
What I want to improve
- Remove unnecessary code and features that are no longer needed.
- Reduce heavy scripts that slow down the page.
- Optimize images and assets properly.
- Improve the structure of the layout and components.
- Load only what is needed instead of everything at once.
- Make the site perform better for first-time visitors, not just returning users.
That last point matters a lot to me.
Caching is great for repeat visitors because their browser may already have certain files stored. But first-time visitors do not have that advantage. They experience the website closer to its real, uncached state.
So if the uncached version is slow, that is still a problem.
Again, I am not anti-caching.
Caching still has a place. It can be useful for static files, public pages, images, stylesheets, scripts, and CDN delivery. A well-configured cache can absolutely make a good website even faster.
But that is the key point:
First, the website should be coded properly. Then caching or a CDN can be added as an extra boost.
Not the other way around.
Because if the site depends on caching or a CDN to feel usable, then the performance problem has not really been solved. It has just been delayed, hidden, or passed to another layer.
So that is where I am at right now.
My current website is not as efficient as I want it to be, and I know that. Instead of pretending caching or a CDN will magically fix everything, I am taking the more direct route: rebuilding and recoding it properly.
That means accepting that the current version has flaws, but also using that as motivation to make the next version better.
Cleaner code. Better performance. Less dependency on tricks. Fewer layers hiding problems.
A fast website should be fast because it is built well, not only because it is cached well.
Caching can still support the final result, and I may use it where it makes sense. A CDN can also be useful in the right situation. But I do not want either of them to be the thing holding the whole performance together.
The goal is not to make an inefficient website look fast. The goal is to build a more efficient website in the first place.
Caching and CDNs can be the polish, but cleaner code should be the foundation.
